Heart Necklace

This necklace was a special 50th birthday commission as a surprise from a husband to his wife. The necklace was designed to be a double heart pendant, the hearts were interwoven with one another and the customer had a choice of diamonds that could be set into the hearts.

One choice was to have two small drop diamonds
Another choice was to have one central larger diamond between the two hearts

Another idea was to have the diamond set in a rub over setting at the top of one the hearts, though this idea was good in theory, in practice the hearts would have been too top heavy and the pendant would be constantly flipping over with the weight of the metal on top. So design number two was chosen and the necklace was made in 18 carat white gold with a round diamond set in the centre.

The birthday girl posted on my Facebook page saying: "Many thanks for my perfect necklace, I love it and it is exactly what I wanted. Great job by Erica and also my husband who commissioned it!"

Beaded Necklaces

Coastal paths, autumnal berries and cherry blossom are all contributors to the inspiration behind my collection of beaded necklaces. Through experimenting with a palette of colours and textures, as well as the different levels of translucency in the stones, I designed and created the necklaces below. Each necklace is handmade in precious gemstones and sterling silver.

Salwag, Amazonite, Apatite, Cultured Freshwater Pearls, Handmade Silver Contour Beads, Petrified Wood

Dyed Cultured Freshwater Pearls, Nephrite Jade, Handmade Silver Contour Beads, Lemon Quartz, Tourmaline

Dyed Cultured Freshwater Pearls, Opal, Aquamarine, Handmade Silver Contour Beads

Dyed Cultured Freshwater Pearls, Aquamarine, Kyanite, Peridot

Peridot, Handmade Silver Contour Beads, Cultured Freshwater Pearls, Amazonite,  Amethyst

Cultured Freshwater Pearls, Opal, Peridot, Handmade Silver Contour Beads, Tourmaline

The handmade silver contour beads that feature in many of the necklaces were inspired by my time spent on the Cornish coast. I observed the pattens that the sea made in the sand when the tide had gone out and also the erosion of the rocks. The beads have proven so popular that I have been commissioned to make a number of earrings to match the necklaces, the earrings contain the beads along with precious gemstones and pearls.

Crane Dance

My Crane Dance necklace, made of precious gemstones and recycled silver, has got off to a flying start this summer!

The Crane Dance necklace

Firstly, I was delighted to have the Crane Dance necklace selected to be in the finals of the Wildlife Artist of the Year 2014. The competition was open to artists world-wide and I was lucky enough to have two pieces reach the finals in London! My Crane Dance necklace, which was selected for the 'Wildlife in 3D' category, plus my 'Choughs above Morvah' watercolour painting. Both pieces were exhibited in the Mall Galleries in London, which was full to bursting on the day of the exhibition.

On top of its success in the Wildlife Artist of the Year, my Crane Dance necklace has also been chosen, along with 'Gentle Mirror' my watercolour painting of the River Brue, to appear at the Real Somerset Exhibition at the A2 Gallery in Wells, more details of this can be found on my website www.ericasharpe.co.uk or at www.a2gallery.co.uk

In addition to this my good friend, artist and sculptor Ian Marlow ARBS was inspired by the necklace to write his poem 'The Dance':

The Dance

I leaned my back against the willow tree,
And through the swaying curtain of its leaves,
I watched them as they moved upon the water’s edge.
Their snow white plumage sparkled in the waves,
As if a thousand cameras flashed to catch the magic of
The show - and yet, I knew that no one watched but me.
And there I stayed, unable yet to move or take my eyes
Beyond the stage on which they played.
They, like perfect actors, saw no audience there;
Performed for no one but themselves, while I saw
Nothing but their dance. Nor did I hear the sounds
That must have touched my ears: the wind among
The leaves, the lapping of the water on the shore,
It was as if my soul had heard their call and fled
To join them there. And so it was.
There I was, white-feathered on the stage,
My wings outstretched, I danced.
My body rising in the air above the white-splashed floor
On which we stepped. On which we swayed.
On which we swept our heads, and bowed, and leapt,
And spun around, and hopped and bopped, and
Pranced and danced to ancient primal rhythms -
Heartbeats of the Earth - that echo from the dawn of time.
And every single flash of white upon the water’s edge
Became a paper square that folded to the image of a bird.
And soon a thousand paper cranes took to the air,
And as I watched them fly away I made a wish:
A wish that humankind might once again return
To dance unto the rhythm of the earth.

Ian Marlow 2014

Due to its popularity so far this summer, I will be reproducing the Crane Dance necklace for sale at my gallery in Wedmore and designing earrings, also in recycled silver, to match the necklace.

The Honey Bee Dance

The Honey Bee Dance ring was inspired by the curious dance that bees use to communicate. By dancing bees 'tell' their hive mates where to find distant flowers with rich new sources of food.

Waggle dance of the honey bee plays in my mind -
Insect intellect tipping and tapping on toes;
Music monumentality swivels the swarm
'Til the sweet sum of floral fecundity flows.

Dance of the Honey Bee, J Michael Campbell

The two bespoke diamonds provide the honeycomb element of the ring

The sweeping figure of the yellow gold ring traces the dance made by a bee when it returns to the hive having found distance flowers.

A Weekend of Drawing

These are just a few of my sketches from an excellent weekend of life, drawing, life-drawing, dance and fun under the excellent guidance of Morag Donnelly.

We were told to create pieces using both hands and conventional tools were not allowed.

We had to capture the dancers mid-movement.

A sponge on a stick and a feather were just some of the bizarre items we used to create our pieces.

Searching for You

My newest collection, 'Searching for You' is based on the beautiful movements and flighty natures of hares. This collection includes jewellery for both men and women, which is a first for me and very exciting!

Preliminary hare pendant designs

Through research into the animals, I found that every civilisation seemed to have a myth or a legend that revolved around hares:

  • In the Western world we refer to the Man in the Moon, but in other societies the Hare (or Rabbit) in the Moon is a more familiar figure.

  • Celtic legend says that Eostre, a goddess associated with luna activity, turned into a hare at every full moon, hares acted as a her messengers and were sacred to her.

  • A Buddhist legend from India states that Buddha was a hare in an early incarnation, the hare sacrificed itself so that it could feed a hungry beggar. The hungry beggar was actually the god Indra in disguise who rewarded the hares sacrifice by turning him into the Hare in the Moon.

  • An Anglo-Saxon myth of a white rabbit that laid coloured eggs at the time of the spring festivals was the basis of the Easter Bunny today.

  • In Western Europe, hares and rabbits came to be held in some suspicion due to tales of them being associated with witches. Even in Somerset we had our suspicions, if a hare appeared in a village street, it was said to be a foreshadowing of a coming fire.

Rabbits have been the subject of my sketching before and they feature in my drawing August blog which can be found here:

My first design that is coming to life is a bangle. It has been designed to be worn by both men and women as the shape of the bangle is not overly feminine or too masculine, and both ends of the bangle are shaped to be the heads of the hares.

The bangle

The bangle is hoping to be ready for the Celebration of Craftsmanship and Design exhibition in August, more details of which can be found here: http://www.celebrationofcraftsmanship.com/Erica_Sharpe.aspx

The rest of the collection will be coming throughout 2014.

A Special Stella

As a special anniversary present, I was commissioned to make a pendant by a husband for his wife. The focal point of the pendant was to be a stunning dark blue sapphire that was to match a pair of earrings previously bought by the couple, which happened to be a pair of blue studs from my Stella collection. Seeing as they wanted the pendant to match the earrings, it made sense to me to embrace the Stella designs in the making of the pendant, but to add a slight twist to make it an individual piece.

The Stella stud earrings

Design ideas

The designs ranged from simple drop pendants with a central sapphire to more intricate Stella-esque patterns with the sapphire flowers and leaves of tsavourite garnet.

The chosen design

The design that was chosen is a play on the Double Flower pendant that features in my Stella collection, however instead of creating the pendant with two flowers at either end of the gold scroll, this design replaces the second flower with the focal sapphire.

The finished pendant

The finished pendant was created with Fairtrade 18 carat gold, it contains light and dark blue sapphires that make up the flowers, tsavourite garnets for the green leaves plus the large dark blue sapphire. It was a very well received and wonderfully appreciated anniversary gift.
